Merciful

Gerry Beckley has always written songs that live somewhere between light and shadow. On his forthcoming solo album "Merciful", arriving August 28th, 2026, on Blue Elan Records, the America co-founder leans fully into that balance, reflective, melodic songs that look back on a lifetime of music, while still searching for what comes next.

Out now, the album’s 1st single, “When The Wells Run Dry”, sets the tone immediately. Written with longtime collaborator Jeff Larson, the song wrestles with impermanence, of inspiration, of relationships, and even of the world around us, against a distinctly California backdrop. Beckley’s reflective vocal delivery and understated production give the track a quiet gravity, carrying lines that feel both deeply personal and universal.

“I consider that mix of light and dark my signature sound”, says Beckley. “So much of rock is based on youth and rebellion, but as songwriters, we get to move those boundaries around as we age”.

Produced by Beckley and Larson, "Merciful" was largely recorded in Gerry’s home studios between Sydney, Australia and Venice, California. Beckley played nearly every instrument himself, joined by a small circle of trusted collaborators including bassist Jason Scheff, pianist Nate Strasser, string arranger Matt Combs, guitarists Steve Fekete and Dave Rosser, horn player Nick Lane, saxophonist James Valentine, backing vocalist Jeff Larson, drummers Ryland Steen, Luke Davison, and Brian Young.

The 13 song collection finds Beckley revisiting old ideas, uncovering unfinished songs from the vault, and pairing them with some of his most immediate new writing in years. Since stepping back from touring in 2023, Beckley says creativity has come in waves.

“For the last few years, we’ve been going back through the archives to see if there were songs that could be improved”, he explains. “These days, since I’ve stepped back from touring, I’ve been coming up with lots of new material”.

Best known as a founding member of the multi platinum band America, Beckley helped define an era with classics like “Sister Golden Hair”, “I Need You”, “Daisy Jane”, and “Tin Man”. But "Merciful" doesn’t dwell on nostalgia. Instead, it feels lived in and present, a record made by an artist still pushing himself creatively decades into an already legendary career.

The album also includes an intimate cover of the Beatles’ “Norwegian Wood” featuring Graham Nash, the soulful groove of “75”, the shimmering “Brand New Night”, and “All The Wounded Cowboys”, inspired by a story told to Beckley by famed photographer Henry Diltz. Elsewhere, Beckley revisits “Monster”, originally released on America’s 1977 album "Harbor", now reframed with nearly 50 years of hindsight.

Though Beckley has officially retired from touring, music remains central to his everyday life, whether joining friends at a Sydney pub to play bass or making surprise appearances like his recent performance of “Sister Golden Hair” with the Killers in Australia.

With "Merciful", Beckley delivers a deeply personal collection that reflects on time, memory, and what remains meaningful as the years move forward. If “When The Wells Run Dry” is any indication, the well itself is far from empty.
