'Rock'N'Roll Hall Of Fame' and 'Canadian Music Hall Of Fame' inductee Robbie Robertson has enthralled music lovers since The Band’s "Music From Big Pink" changed all the rules for popular music in 1968. Through his career with The Band through his Grammy nominated and acclaimed solo work, Robertson also excelled in the art of scoring motion pictures. It began with Martin Scorsese’s 1978 film "The Last Waltz". Next was "Carny", which Robertson produced and starred in with Gary Busey and Jodie Foster, and another Scorsese classic, "Raging Bull", both in 1980. Robertson’s connection to Scorsese lasted over 4 decades more, with Robertson receiving a posthumous Oscar nomination for 2023’s "Killers Of The Flower Moon".
"FilmWorks : Insomnia" explores those 1st 3 films. "The Last Waltz", "Carny" and "Raging Bull". Released in conjunction with his memoir, "Insomnia", name which explores his decades long creative partnership with Martin Scorsese, "FilmWorks : Insomnia" features tracks from those 3 scores, including a previously unissued track from the film "Carny".
Developed with Robbie’s estate, "FilmWorks : Insomnia" is a look into the genesis of Robertson’s film work, and shows how his informed take on the musical element compliments the visual.
Available on black vinyl for Record Store Day, Black Friday, 2025, "FilmWorks : Insomnia" features liner notes by longtime noted film and television music expert Jon Burlingame, which not only address the music of the films featured, but of the Robertson and Scorsese connection. "Insomnia" shows how Robbie’s music transcends the silver screen. It is difficult to imagine a film without music. It’s also incredible to hear how perfectly Robertson’s film music lives on alone.
