Deep Purple’s 50th Anniversary Series continues with a new record, "Made In Japan". 1st released in 1972, "Made In Japan" is a live album recorded by Deep Purple over 3 nights in Tokyo and Osaka, Japan in August of that same year. Now, fans have the opportunity to revisit "Made In Japan" as never before, with the deluxe re-releases of the record on vinyl, CD, and BluRay. The reissues are due out on August 15th, 2025 through Universal Music.
There are 3 different ways to experience the "Made In Japan 50th Anniversary" reissue. 1st, there is a truly staggering 10 LP set, which includes a new stereo mix of the original album, recordings of all 3 of the concerts performed in Japan 1972, and many rare single edits. The 10 LP box set also includes a 60 page booklet with new, updated liner notes and a replica of the original tour poster.
2nd is the 5 CD and 1 BluRay set, which, in addition to the new stereo mixes and newly remixed recordings of the original concerts, includes Dolby ATMOS mixes. The CD set also includes a 40 page booklet with updated liner notes, rare single edits, and a tour poster replica. To celebrate the belated 50th anniversary of "Made In Japan", Steven Wilson sat down to come up with a brand new remix of the original album in stereo as well as in Dolby Atmos.
Wilson says of his new mixes, “It’s all completely as it happened on the night. The album has a power and sense of abandon that they never quite captured in the studio. Hopefully, this new mix makes it feel even more like you’re there”.
Finally, a 2LP version preserves the original album, but boasts the new mix.
As Deep Purple came to global fame in the early 1970s, they became especially known for their live act, so much so that a whole market of bootleg recordings popped up. Though the band had recorded one live album before, 1969’s "Concerto For Group And Orchestra", the decision to record "Made In Japan" was a rather spontaneous one.
"Made In Japan" ultimately proved to be a massive success, both critically and commercially. The live recording of “Smoke On The Water”, originally released on their 1972 studio album "Machine Head", helped the song chart at number 4 on the Billboard Hot 100. The track remains the band’s signature song, and the band went on to release dozens more live albums.
Among Deep Purple’s prolific career, "Made In Japan" remains a high point.
