"Wagon Wheel" may just be a song about a young hitchhiker dreaming of his girl back in Raleigh, North Carolina. An enjoyable little tale of hope and desire. However, as with many works of art, there’s more to the picture than meets the eye here.

Just strip the song of its folkloristic paraphernalia and you will discover a more universal conflict between the quest for freedom and the longing for a romantic reunion. It’s the ancient tale of the quest for the Holy Grail, revived for the needs of the children of the Age of the Aquarius. Our Parsifal here is enjoying 'a nice long toke' on a truck heading West, to a far away place where love and freedom become one and the same.
